Viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to seeing a rising African star in the shape of Gift Orban, who will be in action fir Belgian club KAA Gent in the UEFA Europa Conference League next midweek.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

Orban raised eyebrows last month when he scored a hat-trick in 4-1 away win over İstanbul Basaksehir in the UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16, helping Gent reach the final eight of the continental competition.

The hat-trick was scored within three minutes and 25 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest hat-trick in UEFA club competitions, breaking the previous record of six minutes and 12 seconds held by Egypt captain Mohamed Salah in the Champions League.

This feat earned the 20-year-old Orban comparisons to French great Jean-Pierre Papin, according to Belgian legend Franky van der Elst. Papin was a lethal striker who was named the Ballon d’Or winner and IFFHS World’s Top Goal Scorer of the Year in 1991.

“It’s a no-brainer, which acts extremely fast in and around 16. His second goal against Basaksehir was nice of course, but I also thought the first one was fantastic,” Van der Elst said. “He stands still and gets that ball pushed into his foot. It’s half under you, isn’t it? But then it’s: control left and kick left. Crook-crook. That goes so fast.”

Van der Elst added, “He only needs a few ball contacts to score. I don’t mean that he doesn’t appear much in the game, but how he finishes: always one time, two times max. At Zulte Waregem he finished all his four goals in one time, with right and left. He reminds me a bit of Papin. He also had that direct and selfishness.”

Orban, who grew up in Togo and Nigeria, joined Gent in January 2023 on a permanent move from Norwegian side Stabaek. He previously played on loan for Stabaek from Nigerian club Bison FC, helping the former side earn promotion to the top-tier of Norwegian football by being the top scorer in the First Division with 16 goals.
