Drama: 11 woman MPs bundled onto police trucks like ‘bags of potatoes’, female cop injured in scuffle

Drama and scuffles ensued at Parliamentary Avenue on Thursday morning as a number of women Members of Parliament clad in uniform black ‘gomesi’ staged protests.

The protesting legislators held a procession from parliament with the sole aim of delivering a petition to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as they marched holding placards until halfway through Parliamentary Avenue, when they were greeted by a swarm of security operatives.

Dozens of police officers asked the MPs to stop and return to the precincts of parliament but their pleas fell on deaf ears. The female MPs argued for close to 10 minutes accusing police of frustrating their efforts.

They further argued that they were not trying to instigate violence as the petition was being taken by only them and demanded that instead of intercepting them, police should escort them up to port-bell road where the internal affairs offices are.

When police declined to heed to their demands, the women protested by sitting in the middle of the road as security operatives looked on. Shortly after that, police officers lost patience and a scuffle ensued as they started carrying one by one to a ‘navy blue’ police van parked by the road.

This exercise didn’t go without a struggle as the Mps fought off mostly female police officers forcefully grabbing and bundling them into the van. After a long struggle, the MPs were overpowered and piled like sacks of potatoes before being driven to the Central Police Station in Kampala.

The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire has since confirmed their arrest at CPS saying they face charges of obstructing oncoming traffic at the entrance of parliament and holding an unlawful assembly.

Owoyesigyire says during the scuffle, one of their officers was badly injured and has been admitted to hospital.

Among those arrested include; oan Acom Alobo (Soroti City),Joyce Bagala(Mityana woman MP), Florence Kabugho (Kasese district ), Betty Ethel Naluyima (Wakiso), Kaaya Christine Nakimwero (Kiboga District), and Asinansi Nyakato (Hoima City) and Suzan Mugabi (Buvuma).
