Thugs steal 130 mobile phones during Martyrs Day celebrations

Police have confirmed that a total of 130 mobile phones were lifted from pilgrims during the latest Martyrs day celebrations at Namugongo shrines.

Police says 62 suspects including eight male juveniles and three female adults were nabbed for theft at the Catholic and Anglican martyrs’ shrines on the auspicious day and another 148 were arrested within seven days of policing that kicked off on May 28, 2023.

Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police spokesperson says a total of 199 cases were recorded during the festivities.

Enanga explains that the criminals ‘disguised’ as pilgrims to steal from their victims.

Enanga also states that as of Sunday evening, only 22 pilgrims were still stranded at the Catholic martyrs’ shrines.

“We had 45 children who had been disunited from their relatives but we want to confirm that all the children have since been reunited with their parents and relatives,” Enanga said.

Meanwhile, 20 cases of missing children were reported by parents. However, the children were able to reunite with parents and relatives although parents did not notify the police after reuniting with their children.

Approximately over three million pilgrims attended this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations.
