The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has made chilling revelations following his visit to Masaka Main Prison, where his longtime personal bodyguard, Edward Sebuufu alias Eddie Mutwe, and three other party supporters including Achileo Kivumbi, Mugumya Gaddafi, and Wakabi Grace are currently remanded.
The visit came just days after Mutwe, was formally remanded by the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court until May 26, 2025 on charges of assault, aggravated robbery and damage to property. Bobi who was accompanied by Mutwe’s mother, wife, infant child, and party members like Joel Ssenyonyi and Lewis Rubongoya told journalists that what they found behind the prison walls was deeply disturbing.
“Eddie Mutwe is alive. That’s the only good news. But he is in great pain. He was brutalised in the most barbaric manner. He was electrocuted. He was subjected to waterboarding while they stuffed a cloth in his mouth and tied it around his neck. They squeezed his private parts and hit them with a baton.”,” Bobi Wine said
According to Kyagulanyi, the torture began immediately after Mutwe was taken into custody, allegedly by SFC security operatives.
“They tied his arms with handcuffs and stepped on them, which ate into his skin. They flogged him four times every day. The first torture session started early morning. He was given only one meal a day, just posho and beans,” he added.
The NUP president further described harrowing conditions under which Mutwe was kept.
“When he asked for water, he was told to drink the filthy water he was sitting in, water that he says was mixed with blood. They turned up a loudspeaker every time the torture began so that no one could hear his cries.” he further alleged
One of the most disturbing claims made by Kyagulanyi is that Mutwe was forced to wear a T-shirt bearing the image of President Yoweri Museveni and coerced into swearing allegiance to the President and his son, CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
“They stripped him naked and took pictures of him. They violently cut his beard and mocked him. Then Muhoozi himself came on the third day. Yes, Museveni’s son was there and personally participated in the torture. He challenged Eddie to fight him, Eddie was in handcuffs!” Bobi Wine alleged.
The opposition leader said the guards also used language barriers to justify beatings.
“One of them asked him ‘Amagara?’ in Runyakore. He replied in Luganda, not knowing what they meant. They beat him, laughed at him for not speaking their language, and continued to torture him.”

Mutwe, according to Bobi Wine, suffered severe swelling of the feet. “He told us, ‘It was like I had elephantiasis.’ Even now, he can’t walk without help. They injected him with three unknown substances, forced him to do press-ups and frog jumps after torture.”
Kyagulanyi described the secret detention facilities where Mutwe was allegedly held before being transferred to prison. “He was blindfolded, taken to what looked like a basement of a good home, then to a military facility. During interrogation, he was asked, ‘Who are you to challenge Museveni?’”
The ordeal, Kyagulanyi says, has left Mutwe mentally shaken and emotionally scarred. “He has difficulty finding sleep. Every time he closes his eyes, he sees these monsters. When his wife, mother, and eight-month-old baby visited, he broke down and couldn’t say more.”
Calling for immediate action, Kyagulanyi said, “Eddie Mutwe should not be in jail, he should be in a hospital. His colleagues too should not be in jail. They committed no offence. This is torture. This is terror. And the world must not look away.”
The Uganda Human Rights Commission recently wrote to the CDF , demanding for the release of Mutwe on grounds that his detention was illegal.
