Lawyers representing Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale have reiterated their resolve to pursue bail for their clients, insisting that the Constitution is firmly on their side.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom this afternoon, following the adjournment of the bail application to May 29, lead counsel Erias Lukwago declared that they would not back down in their quest for justice.

“This will not be business as usual next week. We are standing on strong constitutional ground. Article 23(6)(b) of the Constitution clearly states that a person who has been on remand for over six months without trial for a non-capital offence is entitled to bail.”Lukwago said.

Lukwago accused the court of attempts to delay or sidestep constitutional guarantees, saying, “We shall not allow any circumventing of the law. We are ready, and we are going to use the Constitution as our strongest weapon.”

Dr. Besigye and Lutale are facing charges of treason and misprision of treason, and have been in detention for more than six months without trial a key argument in the defense team’s bail application.

The matter will now be heard on Wednesday, May 29, before Magistrate Esther Nyadoi.
