Panic rocked Munyonyo this morning after a suspected female suicide bomber and her alleged accomplice were blown to pieces when an explosive they were carrying detonated prematurely, just 300 meters from the Munyonyo Catholic Basilica.

It all happened around 9:00 AM, when the two suspects riding a motorcycle were intercepted in a high-stakes security operation. BOOM! a massive explosion rocked the area, leaving eyewitnesses in shock and body parts scattered across the scene.

“It was an intelligence led operation, and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption.” he said

Defence Public Information Col. Chris Magezi confirmed that the explosion was linked to a counter-terrorism operation targeting an imminent threat to Martyrs Day celebrations.

“One of the suspects was a female suicide bomber. The operation was intelligence-led and eliminated a real and immediate threat,” Magezi posted on X.

Security forces, including the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT), were already on-site before the blast and quickly secured the area.

By afternoon, soldiers had cordoned off the scene, collected fragments, and removed evidence. The public is being urged to stay calm but alert as Uganda tightens security around the Martyrs Day events.

Mass at Munyonyo proceeded as usual.
