President Museveni has advised Ugandans to take personal responsibility for their health by exercising, keeping clean, and ditching bad habits like smoking and reckless sex.
Speaking during the State of the Nation Address at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Museveni said prevention remains Uganda’s most powerful health tool.
“The prevention strategy remains the most powerful tool for fighting diseases. Therefore, I urge all Ugandans to adopt healthy lifestyles, by exercising, maintaining personal hygiene, eating nutritious foods, sleeping under a treated mosquito net, and refraining from dangerous practices like smoking and sexual promiscuity.” he said
He revealed that government has pumped big money into building health facilities, upgrading maternity wards and putting up staff houses in health centers across the country. For instance, he was amazed to find out that Yumbe District alone now boasts 26 Health Centre IIIs.
“Women and children no longer have to walk long distances just to give birth or get treated,” he said.
Museveni also confirmed ongoing construction of Intensive Care Units, Imaging Centers, and cancer and heart institutes. He added that a Pharmaceutical Industrial Park in Namanve is now making gloves, syringes and drugs like paracetamol.
President Museveni also told the nation that education reforms are underway to teach learners hands-on skills.
“We are re-orienting the curriculum so learners get practical competencies that match the job market. We must solve unemployment among school leavers,” he explained.
Museveni said over 8.8 million pupils are currently benefiting from Universal Primary Education. He also reported that the government built 413 new classrooms and refurbished 181 others this year.
“We’ve now built 161 out of 259 planned seed secondary schools. The rest will be done by June 2025,” Museveni said.
