Today marks the final day for nominations for persons seeking to contest positions on village committees and councils for Youth, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and Older Persons across Uganda.
The nomination exercise, which commenced on June 2nd, concludes at 5:00 PM this evening.
Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission in Uganda, says these elections are the foundational step in the implementation of the 2025-2026 general election roadmap.
“These special interest group elections starting from the village level are very critical because they are successive and progressive in nature,” Mutunguzi stated.
He notes that participation at the village level is a prerequisite fo rpeople wishing to ascend to higher leadership positions within these special interest groups at parish, sub-county, town council, district, and ultimately, national levels.
“If you do not participate in the committee and council elections at the village level, you cannot be able to sneak in along the way,” he warned.
Nomination offices staffed by Electoral Commission personnel are located at every sub-county headquarters, division headquarters, or town council across the country. These offices will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
According to him, Youth seeking office must be aged 18 years and above but below 30 years of age and candidates must be registered on both the youth village register and the national voters’ register.
As for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the eligibility is defined by a specific act. Electoral Commission staff at the nomination centers will provide details on the categories of disabilities that qualify individuals to participate in PWD committee elections at the village level.
He reveals that older persons are defined as people aged 60 years and above. Like youth and PWDs, older persons must first be on the national voters’ register, from which the older persons’ register is extracted based on age desegregation.
Mucunguzi insists all eligible people must ensure they pick up, complete, and submit their nomination forms before the 5:00 PM deadline today.
“Please go out, make sure that you pick the forms, fill them and submit them before the close of the day, before 5pm today,” he appealed
