Nixon Agasirwe, the former Senior Superintendent of Police and ex-commander of the Police Special Operations Unit, has been charged and remanded to Luzira Prison in connection with the 2015 killing of former prosecutor Joan Kagezi.
Agasirwe was formally arraigned before Nakawa Chief Magistrate Esther Nyandoi on Monday, on charges relating to the murder case. The proceedings took place amid heightened interest following his recent arrest last month.
The prosecution alleges that Agasirwe, alongside others still at large, with malice aforethought, caused the death of Kagezi on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, Nakawa Division, Kampala . Kagezi was assassinated by gunmen riding a motorcycle who trailed her vehicle and opened fire as she drove home with her children .
Due to the capital nature of the offense, he was not permitted to enter a plea, as the Chief Magistrate’s Court lacks jurisdiction over murder cases.
The arrest came after a key prosecution witness, Kiwanuka Kisekka, a deserter from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), testified at the International Crimes Division of the High Court. Kisekka implicated Agasirwe by identifying a man he referred to as “fake,” whom he alleged ordered the killing of the late Kagezi.
The State says that ODPP followed other leads, and have managed to have enough evidence to be sure that he can be charged.
The court has remanded him to Luzira Prison until July 08th as investigations and court processes continue.
