A late-night construction activity turned tragic in Buziga Parish, Markindye Division, Kampala, when a building collapsed around 9pm, killing one person and injuring others, while some are still belived to be trapped under.

According to the Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, rescue teams remain at the scene, hours after the incident was reported.

During the police weekly press briefing on Monday, Kituuma revealed that : “We rescued one victim alive and also retrieved one person dead from the rubble.”

He added that the survivor was rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment while the body of the deceased was taken to the city mortuary. He further noted that rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of his statement.

The deceased was identified by locals as Wabuyi Derrick, who was among those trapped during what witnesses described as unauthorized night-time construction work.

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has strongly condemned the incident. KCCA spokesperson Daniel Nuwabine revealed that the building’s owner had no clearance to erect a flat on the premises.

“He never approached the authority for any building approval. The construction was illegal, done at night, using unqualified engineers and local builders,” Nuwabine said.

He further confirmed that two more victims were rescued from the site and taken to Kiruddu Hospital for treatment.

Nuwabine said KCCA is now working closely with the police to ensure that those responsible face justice.

As the investigation continues, Nuwabine has called on all city residents to follow proper building procedures and approvals to avoid future tragedies.
