A dramatic scene played out on Tuesday morning at the Democratic Party (DP) headquarters on Balintuma Road when unknown people dumped several black piglets wrapped in white banners.
The piglets that had writings like “wake up”, “DP bleeds ” among others were reportedly ferried in a khaki box on a boda boda that quickly sped off barely noticed. The alleged critics of one of Uganda’s oldest parties seem to be passing a blame to the current leadership led Justice Minister Norbert Mao , using the infamous piglet method.
While no one has claimed responsibility for the stunt, observers say it suggests growing dissatisfaction with the party’s internal direction.
“This act looks symbolic and could be a protest either from within or by external political actors,” one political analyst told reporters.
The DP has visibly been grappling with internal divisions, the latest being the outcome from the recent delegates conference where some pockets of youths under the youth wing protested the outcome.
A group of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) led by former president Kirya Ismail staged a protest at the Electoral Commision offices in Kampala. They were charged with common nuisance and later released. The protesters, carrying DP flags, mats, and pumpkins had sought a meeting with EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama over DP internal elections in Mbarara. The protest followed a disputed election in which Hellen Sayuni was declared UYD President.
However, the real motive behind this latest stunt remains unclear.
By press time, police had not yet issued a formal statement, and investigations had not been confirmed.
