Buziga Resort sauna leaves three women injured

Kampala’s evening calm was shattered on August 24 when a massive explosion ripped through the sauna at Buziga Country Resort in Upper Buziga, Makindye Division. The blast left three women badly burned.

Police say the incident may have been caused by rashness and neglect, and investigations are ongoing. ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala, identified the victims as: Hajjat Masitula, 69, Vice Chairperson LC I of Katuso Cell, suffering severe burns on her back, chest, and lower body. Zahara Nakawesi Kasenene, 39, with burns and a broken left leg and Mamaram Aisha, with multiple severe burns across her body.

Preliminary information reveals that the sauna’s bricks were burnt to ashes, with the remaining walls heavily cracked. A joint investigation has been launched with the Uganda National Building Review Board (UNBRB) and the electricity supply authority to establish the actual cause.

All three were rushed to Kiruddu Hospital, with two later referred to Nsambya and Mulago Hospitals for specialized care. Police are working closely with the hospitals and supporting the victims’ families.

The scene has been cordoned off for forensic examinations, and witnesses and victims have been questioned. No arrests have been made so far as the cause of the blast remains under investigation.
