Former Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof Venansius Baryamureeba Police is still in police custody as police investigate a fatal accident involving him.

Prof. Baryamureeba was arrested on Wednesday and is currently detained at Kabalagala Police Station for reckless driving leading to the death of a person.causing death as investigations continue.

It all started on Tuesday when Prof Baryamureeba hit a woman dead and injured another at Kibuli, Muyenga junction, Makindye Division while driving in the night.

The deceased Mariam Jagenda was in the company of her friend Mariam Namusoke who is currently battling for life at Mulago hospital where she is admitted to a critical state.

Patrick Onyango the Kampala metropolitan police mouthpiece says Professor Baryamureeba was reportedly driving in a vehicle Reg no U when he badly hit the 2 female pedestrians and later rammed into a perimeter wall.

Onyango says the professor is being treated as a suspect and his vehicle is parked at the Police yard awaiting inspection while police continue with investigations.

Section 108(1) of the Traffic and Road Safety Act 1998 states that a person who causes death through dangerous driving, on conviction, is sentenced to a fine or imprisonment of not less than two years and not exceeding five years or both.
