The Government has resolved to open 48 arcades in Kampala before Friday this week that have adhered to the standard operating procedures-SOPs.
The arrangement was reached during a meeting that was held this afternoon at the OPM between Amelia Kyambadde and Ministers for Kampala, Betty Amongi-Kampala Affairs Minister, and Benny Namugwanya-State Minister for Kampala Capital City Authority on a way forward on the re-opening of arcades.
In a meeting that has been chaired by minister Kyambadde, it was agreed that only those arcades which have been inspected and adhered to the standard operating procedures will qualify to be re-opened.
The government recently instituted a taskforce on COVID-19 that includes an arcade inspection team representing Kampala Arcades Advocacy to inspect arcades in order to reopen.
By 10th July, the team came up with a list of SOPs issued by Kampala Capital City Authority – KCCA and forwarded them in advance to all arcade owners so as to give them time to prepare and put in place what was demanded.
These include an isolation room COVID-19 suspects, hand washing facilities, personal protective gear for workers, Temperature tests detergents among others.
Owners and operators were also advised to install closed Circuit Television Camera’s-CCTV at each entry and exit.
This morning, the Minister in Charge of Kampala Metropolitan Affairs Betty Amongi said that 48 of the arcades in Kampala had met the required qualifications to open.
These include, among others, Mukwano Arcade, Modern complex, Grand Corner Plaza, Arua Park Plaza, Arua Park Annex, Magoba Shopping Mall, Mega Plaza and Sekaziga House,Teddy’s Plaza, KK TRUST, Ham Shopping Grounds, Nabugabo Arcade, Avemar Shopping Centre, Kampala Plaza, Trust Arcade, E-M Plaza, and Galilaaya Shopping Centre, among others.
