Police on Saturday afternoon dispersed Supporters of Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine who had sneaked into Kakyeeka stadium in Mbarara City to attend the manifesto launch.
The excited supporters were seen running at a high speed towards the stadium after dodging security personnel.
The crowd later settled at the pavilion of the stadium and watched the events play out before security forces approached them and chased away all of them.
Joel Senyonyi the NUP spokesperson who was speaking when the incident happened questioned the police actions, saying it wasn’t necessary to chase away the supporters.
Ssenyonyi condemned the police brutality and arrests meted on the NUP supporters saying it is unnecessary.
”People are crowded in markets , Do you want to tell me coronavirus is only on surfaces when NUP is in Mbarara?Ssenyonyi said
The presidential hopeful, flanked by his wife Barbie Kyagulanyi was earlier today welcomed by NUP supporters in the city.
Security in Mbarara has been beefed up to prevent any possible chaos that may arise during the event.
On Friday this week, The Uganda Police Counter Terrorism Director, who also doubles as the Ankole, Kigezi Commander, AIGP Abas Byakagaba warned Bobi Wine against causing chaos in the region
Earlier on, NUP vice President for Western Region Jolly Mugisha and other leaders camped at Mbarara central police station claiming that their campaign materials had been confiscated by police and three supporters arrested.
‘’We are here asking police to give us our campaign materials like the umbrellas, banners, balloons that they confiscated last night but they are playing us pick play,’’ said Mugisha.
