Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA has warned it will crack the whip on persons taking advantage of packing lots to do business in cars.

Lately, Kampala City has picked up an illegal growing trend where people have turned their car-boots into shops and business hubs, this became rampant when the COVID -19 lockdown hit hard in early 2020.

KCCA Spokesperson Daniel Niwabiine, says the car boot business is illegal in Uganda and therefore cannot be accepted, he asks people engaging in the trade to quit or face the consequences of the law.

’We are going to handle it accordingly, the world is becoming more dynamic, but the law is what it is, we shall devise means of accommodating new forms of trade, but Uganda has not come to that time yet and people should abide by the law and follow regulations’’ Niwabiine said

Niwabiine says they park in areas that are meant to be used for a different purpose which disrupts road operations.

“For example these people who sell in their cars, they pack along the street, they open their boots and start  selling  their  merchandise, now  these are not gazetted places for selling, these are packing spots, where you pack, go do your business, come back and drive off, once it becomes a shop then you are obstructing traffic, doing business in an illegal spot and doing business without a license to operate,”  Niwabiine says
