President Yoweri Museveni has said that Uganda will continue to work independently while waiting for foreign assistance to fight the covid -19 virus.
Speaking at Mulago referral hospital, during the launch of the trial herbal treatment for COVID-19, Museveni said he cannot tolerate the kind of slavery where Ugandans sit down and wait for Europeans to produce a vaccine
He said Uganda is striving to be self-reliant so as to defend itself from both external threats and internal disruptions.
Museveni says this is not the first time that natural products are being used for modern medicine like the anti-malarial drug quinine that was made from a plant in South America or penicillin that was made from molds.
The trial vaccine UBV-01-N was made by a section of scientists in Uganda to be tested among 300 participants in Uganda with mild symptoms of covid 19 before it can be vastly produced.
Museveni has also promised to use his Kisanja in office as president to look into the financial plight of scientists by increasing their pay.
The president noted that scientists have been very pivotal in fighting natural disasters and the covid -19 pandemic that has hit Uganda and it is part of his 13 point program to improve their salaries.
