The Supreme Mufti, Sheikh Siliman Kasule Ndirangwa says he was compelled to resign because of the protracted fighting at the Kibuli establishment.

Ndirangwa replaced the late Sheikh Zubair Kayongo in 2015 as the supreme mufti to head the Kibuli based Muslim faction .

Sheikh Siliman Kasule Ndirangwa announced his resignation on Thursday night during a presser saying it was done for the greater good of Islam.

“I would like to tell you that I am no longer going to serve Islam as leader. I have resigned as the Supreme Mufti of Uganda. I have taken the decision for the good of Islam. I have resigned to keep Islam in peace because I am sure that Islam is bigger than me as an individual,” Kasule said.

He went on to explain how he was bored and weary of the continuous leadership wrangles between him and the sheikhs .

“To maintain peace within the religion, I have decided to step down because I won’t keep on fighting with fellow sheikhs in Islam at all the time. So let me give them the room to serve Islam and perhaps accomplish what I might have not finished during my reign.”

The Muslim community split into 2 factions in the early 2000s after the reigning Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Mubaje was accused of illegally selling Muslim properties.

Mufti Mubaje however failed to reconcile the Muslim community despite him apologizing and being cleared of the charges in the courts of law.

The Kibuli faction was later formed as rival leadership led by Prince Kassim Nakibinge, the titular head of Muslims in Uganda.

The vocal sheik has been at the helm in efforts to bring sanity to the Muslim community in Uganda since he assumed office as the Supreme Mufti.

He is vocal for advocating for morality in the Muslim community and upholding societal values, beliefs and norms.
