All legislators in the 10th parliament have been given up to April 30th, 2021 to return IPads handed to them to execute their parliamentary duties .
Parliament spent an undisclosed sum of money to purchase the MPs with the sole purpose of making their work more efficient.
Now , the Clerk to Parliament Jane Kibirige has directed all MP’s to return the Ipads by end of this month except for those interested in purchasing them at a discounted fee.
In a letter dated March 31st and addressed to all MPs, the legislators have been given the option of either returning or purchasing them at a fee set by parliament.
It also states that the Ipads remain the property of the government and should be returned before the end of the 10th parliament in May.
She says the parliamentary commission through the contracts committee has approved the disposal of the IPads by sale to the current users at a fee ranging between 500,000 and 700,000 shillings.
The money will be deducted from the salaries of interested MP’s in May 2021.
This she says is because IPads have become part and parcel of the current holders and carry their MPs’ personal data.
In the 9th parliament, about Shillings 1 billion was spent on purchasing Ipads for the legislators.
They were later sold out to the MPs at Shillings 500,000 at the end of their term.
While introducing the use of Ipads in the previous parliament, officials argued that they would save parliament the huge burden of printing documents.
