Playing Two AFCON Qualifiers
The Federation of Uganda Football Association President Moses Magogo has come out to suggest that playing the final two AFCON qualifiers at Kitende was one of the reasons the Uganda National Men’s Football team, the Cranes failed to qualify for the finals tournament.
Magogo made these remarks during his quarterly Media engagement at Jevine Hotel in Rubaga on Tuesday, April 06.
It should be noted that the Cranes were forced to shift their home from Mandela National Stadium in Namboole to the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende after the former was designated as a COVID-19 centre.
In their final two home qualifiers, Uganda beat South Sudan 1-0 and drew 0-0 with Burkina Faso.
“One of the reasons we failed to qualify for the AFCON finals was because we played our final two home games at Kitende and not Namboole. Magogo started.
“When you hear people list reasons as to why we failed to qualify, no one talks about the fact that we played at Kitende.
“The number of injuries we suffered at the venue are not considered but these players we summon come from leagues where they play on natural grass.
“This is an issues we should make sure does not happen again by having proper infrastructure and this can only be achieved with the help of the government.”
Magogo also emphasized that to achieve qualification, a lot needs to be done and the Federation try to play their role to the best of their abilities.
He stressed that the coaches and players need to execute their roles with the Federation only looked at for ensuring that their is steady progress in terms of football development, something he claims they have done.
“The time we have been here, since 2013, you can see that there has been development in the game.
“We have witnessed progress in the Youth football, Women football, Beach Soccer, Futsal and the National team.
“We ensure that the Cranes are not lacking anything but at the end of the day, you can not win every game and as a nation, we have to appreciate that and move on.”
Playing Two AFCON Qualifiers
The Cranes were attempting to reach a third successive AFCON finals tournament after doing so in both 2017 and 2019.
However, they finished third with 8 points in four team group behind Burkina Faso and Malawi.
