MTN Uganda has today handed over alms to the Muslim community in Jinja district through Busoga Kingdom. This is part of the ongoing Ramadan drive by the telecom to reach out to the Muslim community as they observe the holy month.

This support underscores the long standing relationship that the telecom giant has had with both the Kingdom of Busoga and the Muslim community at large. Last year, the Telecom donated food alms worth Ugx 20 million to Busoga Muslim faithful.

This year’s alms will go to the frontline essential workers who have worked and are still working selflessly and tirelessly to ensure that the communities are safe guarded from the deadly Corona virus.

The food items handed over include; wheat flour, sugar, rice, cooking oil, beans and maize flour among others.

While handing over the foodstuffs at the Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Jinja, Wim vanhelleputte, The MTN Uganda CEO congratulated the Muslim community for observing Ramadan amidst these challenging circumstances and encouraged them to keep the faith and continue to seek Allah at all times.

Vanhelleputte further said that: “Over the years MTN Uganda has stood with Muslim community within the region and this year has not been any different. With our humble donation, we hope that we can show our love and support for the people of Busoga this Ramadan period.”

Representing the kingdom, Owek. Joseph Muvawala, the Busoga Kingdom Prime Minister commended MTN Uganda for the generosity they have always extended towards Busoga Kingdom over the years.

Muvawala also paid tribute to the Muslim community in Busoga for persevering through these tough times and keeping the faith during Ramadan. He encouraged them to continue adhering to the government regulations of social distancing, hand washing and wearing of masks to prevent the spread of the deadly corona virus.

Besides food alms that were handed over to the Busoga Muslim community today, MTN Uganda through Salam Foundation has been distributing food and alms to the Muslim community around the country as part of the telecom company’s support to the Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan. The project was launched with a Ramadan Iftar dinner at Hotel Africana in Kampala at the on-set of the fasting period.

Since the beginning of Ramadan, MTN through Salam Foundation has so far delivered assorted Ramadan items to various Frontline workers in the Muslim communities to support them during Ramadan. The first beneficiaries were The Muslim Leadership of Kibuli and Old Kampala Mosques, The Teachers at Kisaasi College, The Naguru Remand Home, Luzira Prisons Services and the Luzira Training School, Kampiringisa National rehabilitation Center, The Uganda Police Force, The Kampala and Ntungamo Imams Forum as well as the frontline Muslim Health workers at Mulago Kawempe Hospital. Teachers and health workers in Iganga, Bugiri, Mbale, Masaka and Ntungamo districts were part of the beneficiaries. This is MTN’s way of appreciating all the essential workers, particularly on this occasion, those of the Muslim faith, for their steadfast commitment and support to their communities in the fight against covid-19. The handovers of food and alms also started at the onset of the fasting season and will end before Eid-el-Fitr that is expected to fall mid next week.
