Motorists whose driving permits have expired have been given a 1-month ultimatum to renew their licences.

The State Minister in charge of Transport,  Fred Byamukama says motorists should use this time before September 1st to work on their permits.

However, this directive doesn’t apply to vehicle licences that expired prior to the 42-day lockdown.

Such vehicles remain liable to penalties during the process of renewal.

Byamukama explains that the grace period will only apply to persons whose permits expired during the recent lockdown

We are giving you one month so that by September 1, you have sorted the problem, the extension however does not apply to licences that expire from before lockdown as he said motorists are always urged to apply for a new permit several weeks before it actually expires.

Byamukama further explains “If your permit expired before lockdown, don’t use this opportunity to disturb the officers, instead have it renewed so that you don’t get problems. The same advice goes to those who don’t have permits,”.

The Minister has further cautioned police officers against extorting money from motorists with already expired permits.

He has asked victims of such corrupt tendencies by police /traffic cops to report to the relevant authorities for action to be taken.
