Traffic police has revealed that over 200 people succumbed to road accidents in September, 2021.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Faridah Nampiima, the Trafficked and Road Safety Police Directorate while updating the media at the police headquarters in Naguru on Monday said at least 229 people died as a result of 1,407 road accidents recorded last month.
Nampima explained that out 1470 road accidents registered across the country, 1054 people sustained serious and minor injuries.
This is the highest number of accidents recorded in the last three years, however, it is the lowest number of road fatalities.
Nampiima has attributed the increase in accidents to over speeding and reckless driving mostly caused by boda boda riders .
She explained: “The major cause of these accidents was speeding and reckless driving. Drivers who have continued to drive beyond prescribed speed meters. When you are driving a small car on the road you are not supposed to drive beyond 100 kilometres per hour, passenger vehicles should not exceed 80km per hour and loaded trucks are not supposed to exceed 80 kilometres per hour.
In September 2020, a total of 1,270 accidents were recorded and 365 people died. In 2019, September had 1,113 accidents in total but those few accidents killed 356 people.
