Bomb blasts create anxiety

As President Yoweri Museveni prepares to address the nation this week on Covid-19 and other matters, security forces continue to investigate bomb explosions and threats in the country.

According to Lindah Nabusayi, Senior Press Secretary, Museveni will address the country this Thursday at 8pm.

His address comes on the heels of two people confirmed dead and several others sustaining serious injuries as a result of two separate bomb attacks, three days apart.

Swift bus

The first happened on Saturday after a bomb went off at Komamboga in Kawempe, leaving one dead and several others injured. The second incident took place on Monday along the Kampala-Masaka highway where a bomb went off inside a Swift Safiris bus, killing a lone passenger.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement on Monday that the Police are investigating whether the victim in the bus was the bomber or not. However, preliminary reports say that the blast was from the seat and it killed only that person and injured the one seated behind.

Bomb blasts create anxiety

“So far one person has been confirmed dead and several others evacuated from the scene,” police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement.

Relatedly, there was a bomb scare in Namasuba yesterday evening after an abandoned suitcase suspected to contain explosives was discovered at Bata Bata, Namasuba, opposite Front Page Hotel. Police cordoned off the area when they received the alert.

A statement from police says a  team of bomb squad experts using a sniffer dog weren’t able to detect any bomb materials inside the bag but went on to safely blow up the bag in order to open and know the contents. Only men’s clothes were recovered. There were no explosives found inside.

President Museveni has condemned both attacks through his social media platforms and assured the public of action against the perpetrators.

“As the hunt for the criminals of Pader who were trying to blow up Gen Lokech’s funeral service, Komamboga where one young Ugandan person was killed and 3 injured, continues, another low power explosive happened on a bus going to Ishaka, killing one person and injuring another one,” Museveni said in a brief statement on Monday evening .

“The Police are investigating whether the person blown up was the one carrying the bomb or not. Preliminary reports say that the blast was from the seat and it killed only that person and injured the one who was sitting behind.” he further explained.

“By foolishly continuing with their criminality, they have invited us to crush them and we shall,” Museveni said following the Komamboga bomb blast

Global terrorist group, Islamic State has since claimed responsibility for the first attack in Komamboga but security has said it is too early to conclude the group behind the attack.
