UPDF soldier shoots Traffic officer

The Uganda Police has condemned as embarrassing and brutal the shooting at a Traffic Police Constable on Sunday morning in Ntinda, Kampala.

Police Constable Mukerezi Robert sustained gun shot wounds to his leg following a heated disagreement with a Uganda People’s Defence Forces UPDF Major Okua Alpha attached to Cheiftancy of Military Intelligence CMI

Fred Enanga the Uganda Police Spokesperson says Mukerezi was only executing his duty as a traffic police officer to tow away wreckage from a UPDF Toyota Prado TX registration number H4DF 1391 that had earlier been involved in an accident.

Enanga explains that the Toyota Prado had veered off the road and rammed into a sign post prompting the intervention of PC Mukerezi who approached the vehicle to establish the condition of the victims and the car. He says Mukerezi ordered that the wrecked vehicle be towed to the nearest Police station on Kira road to which the victims rejected.

In the process of arranging to tow the breakdown, a second UPDF vehicle commanded by Maj Okua responded, I think one of the victims called them ,they disagreed with the towing of the vehicle as part of the traffic investigations into the accident and instead injured the traffic officer,”Enanga explains

Enanga says the UPDF officer was unprofessional and out of order when he opened fire on the traffic officer. He says the suspect who remains on the run will be charged with attempted murder and misuse of firearms.

On Sunday afternoon, the UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col Ronald Kakurungu said the incident occurred following a “misunderstanding between the traffic officer and the soldier” regarding the recovery of the vehicle that was involved in the accident.

“In the process, unfortunately, the traffic officer was shot and injured in the leg. The officer was rushed to Mulago hospital and fortunately he has been stabilized and is out of danger,”Kakurungu said.
