Maj Okua arrested
The Uganda People’s defence forces has revealed the real culprit behind the shooting of a traffic police-officer Robert Mukebezi in Ntinda, Kampala.
This follows the arrest of Maj Alpha Okua, by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in relation to the shooting, that has left Mukebezi with an amputated limb and still receiving treatment at Victoria Hospital.
Ronald Kakurungu, the UPDF Spokesperson says that Maj Okua who was arrested to help with investigations has revealed that Police Constable Mukebezi was shot by, Cpl Bashir Mango, who is currently on the run.
Kakurungu explains that two bullets were fired by Cpl Mango, but only one injured Mukebezi’s leg since he was sitting in the co-drivers seat. He adds that Cpl Mango’s gun was reportedly recovered dumped in Bukasa village.
Maj Okua arrested
Kakurungu has also cleared the air on reports that Mukebezi was gunned down ,trampled on and left to die, he says Maj Okua took the initiative to personally transfer the injured officer to hospital, contrary to the widespread belief that good Samaritans came to his rescue.
“He is helping with investigations. There has been bad and wrong information going around. It is Maj Okua who evacuated the wounded officer. He first went to Kira Road police and recorded the statement. He drove Mukebezi to Mulago. He was the most senior officer and he took responsibility,” Kakurungu said.
Kakurungu says the hunt is on for Cpl Bashir Mango as investigations into the incident continue.
Mukebezi was shot on Saturday last week after intervening in an accident involving a UPDF vehicle Prado H4DF 1391 that veered off the road, knocking a signpost at Kobil Petrol Station along Kiwatule-Naalya road. Mukebezi ordered for a breakdown truck to tow the wreckage to Kira Road Police Station.
In the process, another UPDF Pick Up vehicle being driven by Maj Okua arrived and the occupants objected the move to tow the Prado away, a heated argument ensued prompting the shooting.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga on Monday revealed that Maj Okua and others still at large face charges of attempted murder and misuse of fire arms.
“We would like to inform the public that the police together with UPDF are searching for the UPDF officer who was involved in the shooting of a traffic officer. He was lawfully carrying his duties. It is quite embarrassing, it is an act of impunity, an act of lawlessness and unprofessionalism,” Enanga said.
