The Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga has hailed the Chief Justice of Uganda Alfonse Owiny-Dollo for acting courageously and apologizing to the Kabaka .

CJ Owiny-Dollo visited the headquarters of Buganda Kingdom at Bulange, Mengo, escorted by an entourage of religious leaders under the inter-religious organization, former UPC Party President Olara Otuunu among others

The purpose of his visit was to apologise in person over allegations he made about the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda ii being airlifted for treatment in Germany in a presidential jet.

Following the closed door meeting that lasted about 45 minutes , Katikkiro Mayiga said upheld the CJ for acting with humility, courage and maturity.

“I commend him for his humility he has exhibited. Him coming here is an expression of humility which we appreciated very much. I commend him for being courageous. For him to acknowledge something that didn’t go well with others requires a lot of coverage. In Buganda we say friendship follows a fight (Omukwano guva mu Ngabo). He came as a friend and he is going as a brother,” the Katikkiro said before urging all Ugandans to “leave what was said behind us.” he said

The Katikkiro urged Ugandans to put behind the bad blood and comments made by the Chief Justice because the people of Acholi and Buganda share a common ancestry.

“We have met to put aside and behind us the things that could put us apart and move forward on the huge common goals and purpose which unite us together. I want to report that this meeting was very meaningful and successful. We came here in peace and we leave here knowing that we are more close together than we were hitherto and for this I would like to thank the leadership of the church who are represented here for playing their part,” CJ Owiny-Dollo said.

The Chief Justice meanwhile commended the Katikkiro for being mature in his March 25th, 2022 response, which made him realize his mistake and prompted leading to Thursday’s meeting.

Backgound

While addressing mourners at the residence of the deceased’s speaker in Muyenga, Kampala, the Chief Justice accused  people in the diaspora for protesting against Oulanyah’s treatment in the US yet their ethnic leader was also allegedly transported in a presidential jet to Germany using public funds, “calling them super-evil”.

But you, who were demonstrating… your ethnic leader was transported in a presidential jet to Germany using public funds he was not entitled to. You did not demonstrate,” Dollo said.  The speech attracted a lot of backlash from several Ugandans in the diaspora with many accusing the Chief Justice of making tribal sentiments.

They asked him to retract his statements, which were interpreted as a direct attack against the Katikiro. In a rejoinder, the Katikkiro issued a statement on March 25th, 2022 dismissing the CJ’s remarks against the Kabaka’s treatment in Germany.
