The pick of Premier League matches this weekend is definitely the meeting of Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on the evening of Sunday 10 April. This clash is a potential ‘title decider’, with the Citizens and the Reds both hoping to claim victory in this ‘six pointer’ and put themselves in prime position for the final stretch of the season.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, however, has argued against the narrative that this clash will be decisive in the title race: “It’s a massive game, of course, but not necessarily a decider,” said the Spanish tactician. “We’ve got to win a lot of games [not just this one]. There are still more games, a lot of points to go.”

The round opens on the evening of Friday 8 April with an intriguing clash between Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park, while the early kick-off on Saturday 9 April sees Everton host Manchester United at Old Trafford – with Toffees boss Frank Lampard desperate for a win to boost his team’s survival hopes.

“I don’t put an emphasis on Goodison Park, I want to get points everywhere,” said Lampard. “We can’t get stuck in the rut of looking at this game alone.”

Saturday also features Arsenal at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea face a tricky trip to Southampton, and Watford will tackle Leeds United in a relegation six-pointer at Vicarage Road – with Hornets manager Roy Hodgson admitting that he cannot promise survival.

“Whether or not I can produce what they really want, i.e: the change from being down the bottom and not winning to suddenly winning and shooting up the table… I can’t guarantee that, I can only work towards it but I shall enjoy the work towards it.”

The late kick-off on Saturday sees Aston Villa playing host to the unpredictable Tottenham Hotspur, while Sunday – aside from the City v Liverpool clash – will feature another key game in the relegation battle as Norwich City host Burnley at Carrow Road.

SuperSport is also the only place to get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the top match for this round sees Real Madrid host Getafe at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the lesser-known capital city derby. Los Blancos are continuing their push to reclaim the league title, with manager Carlo Ancelotti insisting that his side need to keep pushing right to the end of the season.

“We need to keep the focus and the intensity,” said the Italian tactician. “We will not assume that anything is done until it is mathematically secure. The players are in a good moment, the intensity is good… we must make sure that we have the right mentality.”

Real’s arch rivals Barcelona will back themselves to win away to strugglers Levante, with veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets explaining that the Blaugrana are a much more competitive unit under the leadership of manager Xavi.

“The self-esteem, the state of mind, the confidence. A new coach has arrived and has made many changes. Xavi introduced the philosophy that he had maintained for many years,” explained Busquets. “We are a much more complete team, we do many more things well and we are more of a team after all. It is clear that we still have a long way to go, but this is the way.”

Outgoing champions Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, will have a tricky trip to the islanders of Mallorca, though manager Diego Simeone wants his side to embrace their fighting spirit – especially with major UEFA Champions League clashes looming.

“It will be tough from now until the end of the season, but we must have the right attitude, the attitude to fight and compete for every result,” said the Argentine.

Other games to watch in the Spanish top flight this round are Real Sociedad’s visit to Elche, Sevilla hosting Granada, and Athletic Bilbao visiting Villarreal – with the Yellow Submarine chasing a home win to boost their European ambitions.

“The rival is going to set the bar high for us,” said Villarreal boss Unai Emery. “We have high expectations in our own self-confidence. We will be ready to play a competitive game and to go all the way.”

The top clash from this weekend in Serie A sees Milan visit Torino and look to keep up their push to win the title for the first time since 2011.  Manager Stefano Pioli insists that his team must not get carried away by the thought of the Scudetto, but focus on their processes and the game at hand.

“We will see how our action develops and how [our opponents] will play. We have prepared the game to be effective,” said Pioli. “We are only thinking about this match. We are fighting for the first places, but the season is still long.”

Title rivals and reigning champions Internazionale will be at home to Verona and chasing three points, while the same can be said for Napoli when they welcome Fiorentina to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

“We know that to win the Scudetto again, we must do more and take a different approach to these games, even if there are some excuses,” said Inter manager Diego Simeone.

Former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi believes Milan hold the advantage in the title race and argues that a triumph for them will be a “masterpiece”.

“Milan must always play well because they don’t have the experience or technical knowledge of expensive players,” he explained. “Milan players are not expensive. If they win the title, it’s a masterpiece because they’ve built a team without spending much. I like how they play. They are not the best team, but they play the best football.”

Capital city clubs Roma and Lazio will also have a major say in the relegation battle this weekend, as they face struggling Salernitana (home) and Genoa (away) respectively, while Sassuolo hosting Atalanta at Stadio Citta del Tricolore could be a goal-laden classic between two attack-minded teams.

“We always try to play in a way that maximises our attacking potential,” said La Dea boss Gian Piero Gasperini. “I expect our opponents will have the same mentality and it will be a beautiful game for the supporters to enjoy.”
