Effective Friday April 22 ,2022, Ugandans will have to dig deeper into their pockets when travelling short and long distances.
This follows a joint resolution between the Uganda Taxi Operators Federation,(UTOF) and Ministry of Transport and Works. The operators claim that after interactions with the Minister for Transport and Works Gen. Katumba Wamala, over skyrocketing fuel prices, they were given a go ahead to increase fares..
While speaking to journalists earlier today morning at Nalubwama Arcade, Rashid Ssekindi , Chairman UTOF announced that effective by 23rd, April 2022, transport fares will be revised upwards for passengers traveling within the City and upcountry.
Ssekindi explained that vehicles operating town service will increase by between 500 to 1,000 shillings, on short distances while those operating within a distance of 80km,will add 3,000 shillings. For those operating upcountry, they will add 5000 Ugandan shillings,
Ssekindi however says it’s not mandatory to increase the fares and they will return to normal once the fuel prices recind.
Ssekindi said they noticed a reduction in the number of passengers especially on stages around town areas, this is basically due to a threat from boda boda riders who have moved closer to the the taxi stages.
“Most of you know that we have few passengers especially on our stages of town service, because boda boda riders have moved closer to our stages, and there is fear that when we increase the prices , passengers will decide to board boda bodas, and we can’t keep quite”, he said.
