Lawyers to incarcerated politicians Kizza Besigye and Mukaku are up in arms after Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court declined to grant bail to their clients.

Leader of pressure group ‘People’s Front for Transition’ Dr Besigye and his accomplice Mukaku a former Rubaga South Mp contestant were on Friday morning further remanded to Luzira on charges of inciting violence.

The duo had appeared before the Grade One Magistrate Asuman Muhumuza following a bail application filed by their lawyer Erias Lukwago.

However, bail was dismissed on grounds that the suspects would repeat the same offence, because they were previously charged before the same court on similar charges of inciting violence.

He said that the integrity of the court has to be shielded from involvement in politics. The presiding Magistrate also stated that Besigye and Mukaku have a right to appeal if they are not satisfied with his decision.

Besigye’s lawyer was left breathing fury over the Magistrate’s decision. Lukwago told journalists that he intends to appeal the bail ruling because it was made out of bias.

Lukwago says the Magistrate failed to quote the law in his deliberations and that the offence before the court is bailable under the law.

“It’s a political decision, the law is very clear. The magistrate has not addressed himself to matters of law, he is considering a political issue, otherwise he knows the foundation of our justice system is that one is innocent until proven guilty,” Lukwago said.

Lukwago said that they are going to challenge the decision in the Court of Appeal.

Besigye had presented two  substantial sureities including the Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and Kitgum Municipality Member of Parliament Denis Onekalit as his sureties. While Mukaku presented former Mbale District Woman Member of Parliament Aspirant Margaret Wokuri Madanda and former Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor Sulaiman Sserwada Kidandala as his sureties.

The duo was on June 14th, 2022 netted in Kikuubo, Shauriyako parish, Kampala city,

Besigye and Mukaku were protesting the skyrocketing prices of commodities in the country. They have been further remanded until July 1st 2022.
