Sarah Opendi Achieng, the Woman Mp for Tororo Municipality is concerned about increasing nudity in schools.
Raising a matter of national importance during plenary on Thursday afternoon, Achieng demanded that something be done to regulate inappropriate and revealing dress code on the part of learners and musicians visiting schools.
Achieng says over the past few weeks, there has been growing concern from members of the public on musicians dressing badly during concerts in schools and students alike.
Acheing says a video circulating on various social media platforms showed a Ugandan musician dressed badly and dancing seductively in front of learners at school.
“Most of you have seen a video last week on social media of musicians dancing in obscene and seductive ways and students also joining in.This is completely unacceptable, there are ways musicians should dress at school, some of these musicians were almost naked,” she says
The MP also says during the last graduation ceremony at Makerere University, most students showed up almost naked in their gowns .
“Students dressed almost naked in gowns. We need our children with good morals and to respect their bodies. Mukono district is one place where students don’t dress badly and have regulations,” Aching explained further
She asked the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon Thomas Tayebwa to hold the Ministry of Education accountable for guidelines on the dress code of learners.
However, some legislators did not agree with her, Kira Municipality . MP, Ssemujju Ibrahim forinstance stated that the MP was out of line to raise dress code in schools as a matter of national importance because indecency is relative.
Ssemujju explained that what may be considered indecent in one society may be okay with another. He cited the Karamojong community that moves almost naked, saying it’s okay because it’s their culture.
In response, the Deputy Speaker stated that something has to be done to regulate learners showing up naked in school before the situation gets out of hand.He says the reason learners put on uniform is to observe decency.
“Otherwise, we are going to be like one of those places where your son wakes up and says “I want to be a woman” I saw the daughters of billionaire Elon Musk and the Tororonto , Canada Mayor saying they are men. That’s where we shall reach unless standards are in place” Tayebwa stated
