Irate youths under the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), a Youth wing of the opposition Democratic Party have in a twist of events withdrawn a plot to demonstrate.
The fuming youth had planned to demonstrate a decision by the party president Norbert Mao, to sign a cooperation agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement -NRM.
In the agreement, the two parties agreed to share political power and foster constitutionalism and respect for human rights.
The DP Youth wing stormed the offices on Balintuma road in Nakulabye, and another on City House in Kampala threatening to take over and reclaim ownership of the party. They accused Mao of selling the party to the NRM.
However, police Field Force Unit-FFU officers under the command of Old Kampala Division District Commander Tyson Rutambika soon deployed heavily at the two offices, sealing off the offices.
DP Kampala District Chairperson Ssentongo Sharif Nambale said they backed off after advice from the DP elders, including Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere, to abandon the use of force.
Feeling overpowered, the youth group and other members left the Balintuma offices where they had gathered since morning.
