Street hawker dies
Police in Kampala has confirmed that one person died instantly after an entrance gate at Park Nkadde Mall located at the Old Taxi Park collapsed on him.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, identified the deceased as Ronald Nduggwa, a hawker. Nduggwa was reportedly a resident of Kazo, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district.
Onyango said Nduggwa died due to the negligence of the managers of the building, adding that investigations have been launched into the matter to establish the real culprits.
Eyewitnesses at the Old Taxi Park claim the deceased was walking past when the gate collapsed and killed him.
According to a witness identified as Kantonyi, Nduggwa apparently realised that the gate was collapsing and attempted to run to safety but was blocked by taxis that were entering the taxi park.
Some claim the gate had been in a dilapidated state for a while but the owners were obstinately negligent.
“We saw him running to save his life but the taxis that were entering the Old Taxi Park blocked him. The taxis hard minor scratches but Nduggwa died on the spot,” Kantonyi said.

“This gate was being held by only two hinges yet it was very heavy. It was opened in the morning by shop attendants and they placed merchandise on it. I think the weight was too much and the hinges gave way,” Mubiru stated.
Police at Ben Kiwanuka Police Post under commander Flavia Musiimenta, have since transferred Nduggwa’s body to Mulago Hospital morgue for a postmortem.
The incident at Old Taxi Park comes five days after soil collapsed on builders at Mbiro zone, Kafumbe-Mukasa Kisenyi II killing one person on the spot. The deceased was identified as Kato, who died as he was being rushed to Doctor’s Clinic, in Mengo.
