In a bid to organize, set their job rightfully and decrease the crime rate in their occupation, taxi operators have launched the registration of all taxi operators inclusive of all taxi and Costa owners, drivers and conductors starting from Kampala district. The said registration will then move to other districts.

The exercise commenced today at the old taxi park in Kampala

There has been an increase of criminals using taxis to rob people. During this time, there were fights among the taxi operators not until they formed a unified body consisting of all taxi leaders under Federation of Uganda taxi operators.

Mayambala Mustafa, one of the leaders in UTOFA says that the exercise is intended to decrease criminality in their occupation and also lobby from the government.

He has therefore urged taxi operators to embrace the cause, not to politicize it because it’s intended to help them.

Rashid Ssekindi, the chairperson UTOFA says that this registration is to ease the work for KCCA and the Ministry of Works and Transport.

He adds that after registration, a taxi operators will be given an identification card which will bear a barcode. When scanned, it will have the national ID details, driving permit. The body says the identity card will be hard to be duplicated.

This registration is to be done by the chairpersons and secretaries of different stages at a fee of twenty thousand shilling and will end on the 15th of December.
