Blood and twisted metal marked a terrifying scene last night on the Kampala–Gulu highway when two vehicles collided head-on, killing five people instantly and leaving six others fighting for their lives.
The deadly smash-up happened around 8:30 PM in Kyalweza Village, Wabinyonyi Sub-county, when a speeding white Toyota Hiace (Reg No. UA 415AV) veered off its lane and rammed into a white Nissan Diesel truck (Reg No. UBL 615T) coming from the Gulu side.
Eyewitnesses described a “loud bang” followed by “screams and smoke” as the two vehicles crushed into each other with unimaginable force. Both drivers are still unidentified, and their conditions remain unknown.
Police swung into action immediately after receiving the distress call.
According to ASP S. TwiineAmazima, the spokesperson for the Savannah region, officers cordoned off the area, recorded witness statements, and rushed the injured victims to Nakasongola Health Centre IV and Kiryandongo Hospital for emergency care.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for postmortem, and the wrecked vehicles were towed to Katuugo Park Yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
“It’s a tragic incident. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full cause of the accident,” ASP TwiineAmazima said in a statement.
