Police awaits autopsy report on Dr. Spire sudden demise
Police are investigating the sudden and unexplained death of Dr. Spire Kiggundu, a respected gynecologist and president of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Uganda (ALSU), whose body was discovered on Sunday afternoon at Dream Guest House in Kajjansi, Entebbe.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause of death.
“Yes, we registered a death in Kampala Metropolitan South. The deceased is Dr. Spire Kiggundu. He was found dead and asleep. We are carrying out further investigations,” Rusoke said,
He revealed that a full post-mortem and toxicological analysis are being conducted.
“Some information will be shared with the public, while other details will be communicated directly to the family,” he added.
Dr. Kiggundu, who ran Henrob Hospital in Zzana, Wakiso District, was known for his pioneering role in bringing laparoscopic surgery to regional and lower-resource hospitals in Uganda. He trained dozens of young doctors and was a strong advocate for more affordable, minimally invasive procedures.

His unexpected death has shocked the medical community, with patients and colleagues describing him as compassionate and forward-thinking. Residents in Zzana, where he lived and worked, remembered him as a generous figure who often extended treatment on credit to those in need.
“He was a humanitarian doctor. Very few like him still exist,” said one resident.
Today, a requiem mass will be held at Henrob Hospital at 4:00 pm.
According to his family, Dr. Kiggundu will be laid to rest on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at his ancestral home in Kalisizo, Kyotera District.
