CHAN 2025

As Uganda gears up to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025, the Uganda Police Force has released a detailed traffic management plan to guide motorists, pedestrians, and match attendees on designated routes, diversions, and parking arrangements during the tournament.

In a statement issued by Superintendent of Police (SP) Michael Kananura, the public was advised to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, especially on match days at Mandela National Stadium – Namboole and other key venues.

“Traffic Police will be heavily deployed along all designated routes to ensure the safety and smooth movement of CHAN 2025 participants and dignitaries,” SP Kananura said.

Motorists are encouraged to use specific access roads to reach the stadiums:

From Naalya Interchange to Namboole Interchange, then enter Mandela National Stadium via the main gate.

From Busega roundabout via Natete and Kabusu traffic lights to reach Wankulukuku Stadium.

From Mulago traffic lights through Wandegeya and Makerere Hill Road to Kadiba Stadium in Mengo.

From Jinja Road traffic lights to Kyambogo junction via the Ministry of Works to access Kyambogo University Playground.

The traffic police clarified that diversions will only be activated if necessary, particularly during ongoing matches at Namboole. These diversions, which begin at 12:00 PM on match days, will mostly affect trucks and private vehicles:

Trucks will be diverted at Kalelwe Interchange to the Gayaza–Kalagi–Mukono route.

More truck diversions will happen at Mukono, redirected through Kalagi–Gayaza–Kalelwe Interchange.

Vehicles will also be redirected from Naalya Interchange to Kyaliwajjala–Ssonde–Seeta.

Further diversions will be enforced at Seeta, leading vehicles toward Namugongo and back to Naalya.

From Bweyogerere, motorists will be rerouted through Jokas Hotel and Kinawataka Road.

A cutoff point will be established at Hared Petrol Station, restricting access to Kireka Trading Centre.

The stretch from Kireka-Nasanga junction to Jokas Hotel Road will be reserved for pedestrian traffic only.

The police also issued a strict directive on parking access at stadiums, particularly Mandela National Stadium, stating that:

“Parking at the Southern Playground Wing is strictly reserved for VIP-accredited vehicles only. Members of the general public are advised not to come with vehicles, as access will be denied without a VIP sticker,” SP Kananura emphasized.

VIPs have been reminded to clearly display their stickers to allow easy identification by parking officers.

Kananura has advised road users to: Comply fully with directives issued by traffic officers, show maximum discipline, patience, and courtesy on roads, plan journeys early to avoid delays, especially during peak tournament activities.

CHAN 2025 is expected to attract tens of thousands of fans and teams from across the continent, and Uganda Police says it’s ready to ensure smooth transit, secure venues, and coordinated traffic flow during the tournament period.
