EC pushes Bobi Wine’s nomination

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has finally received its golden ticket ,a certificate of eligibility to field Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, in the 2026 presidential race.

This brings the number of cleared aspirants to four including; President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM), Nathan Nandala Mafabi (FDC) an Stecia Mayanja of National Peasants Party (NPP)

But there’s drama already. Kyagulanyi had applied for his big nomination on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Instead, the Electoral Commission (EC) pushed him to Wednesday the 24th at 2:00PM.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya fumed, saying the late-hour slot is a deliberate trick to block Bobi Wine from addressing his supporters.

EC pushes Bobi Wine’s nomination

“We have just received a letter from Mr. Simon Byabakama, the Electoral Commission Chairman, informing us that our candidate will be nominated on Wednesday, September 24, at 2:00 pm instead of Tuesday morning as we requested. We had already planned rallies at 12 noon and 4:30 pm that day. We clearly view this as persecution born out of fear.” he said

“Kyagulanyi had lined up rallies at Katwe Stadium at 12PM and Nateete at 04:30PM on Tuesday. But giving him 2PM means they want to eat his time and silence him.” Rubongoya addded

He added that the party has been renting venues and notifying Police two days in advance, but now accuses the EC of mocking their candidate.

“This will not stop us in any way. We shall go on with our plans. We are announcing to the nation that yes, we are treating Wednesday as a public holiday.”
