EC nominates Bobi Wine
The Electoral Commission has duly nominated Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, as a presidential candidate in the 2026 elections. Kyagulanyi, who was accompanied by his wife Barbie Itungo, senior leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and party supporters, received his nomination certificate this afternoon in Lubowa. His entry brings the total number of candidates cleared so far to six.

Speaking after his official nomination, Bobi Wine declared that Uganda’s wealth is not the problem , it’s the lack of leadership.

“Our people are hardworking, creative, resourceful, and full of promise. Our country is rich in natural resources. Our problem is not wealth. Our problem is leadership.” he said
The musician-turned-politician hit out at what he called a regime that “enslaves rather than uplifts” citizens. He reminded supporters of the struggles of 2021, when many NUP members were allegedly tortured, imprisoned, killed, or disappeared. Yet, he insisted, the fight continues.

“Why risk the tear gas, bullets, prisons, and torture? Because giving up is worse. “If we surrender now, it means our heroes died in vain. We must move forward, even if our chance is just 1%.” he said
Bobi Wine framed the 2026 elections as a peaceful protest against 40 years of injustice.
“This election is not ordinary. We must protest legally, constitutionally, non-violently, and vote in numbers too big to rig.”

He also spoke to Ugandans abroad, who send over $2 billion home annually:
“We fight so that you can return to your homes, families, and freedom, welcomed with roses, not handcuffs.” he added

In a pointed message to President Museveni, Bobi Wine urged a smooth exit:
“Uganda was here before you and will be here long after. Don’t burn it down on your way out. The best guarantee for your legacy is a peaceful, democratic transition.”

The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, noted that only candidates who meet the endorsement threshold are being cleared.
He asked those nominated to submit their campaign itineraries so the EC can coordinate and avoid clashes. With Museveni, Kyagulanyi, Muntu, and others now in the race, the 2026 contest is shaping into a hotly contested election.
