Muntu speaks against impunity

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) president, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu is among the seven candidates to secure his nomination for presidency .

Addressing journalists after his clearance, Muntu described his candidacy as a direct response to what he termed “systemic impunity” and the erosion of justice in Uganda.

He accused the ruling party of exposing its true character during its internal processes in Kololo, warning that unless citizens demand accountability, the country risks recycling the same leadership.

Muntu emphasized that his campaign would prioritize human capital development over physical infrastructure.

He argued that education, healthcare, and food security are the foundation for long-term growth. “The human resource factor is the central core in the development process. With the right focus, the sky is the limit,” he said.

Justice and equality before the law were recurring themes in Muntu’s remarks. He criticized what he called selective application of the law and prolonged detentions without trial. “There must be justice… everybody must be below the law, including the president,” he stressed.

Drawing on Uganda’s political history, Muntu warned against rule by impunity, which he said had led to collapse in past decades. He promised that ANT’s programme would prioritize fairness, accountability, and the rule of law.

The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, noted that only candidates who meet the endorsement threshold are being cleared. He asked those nominated to submit their campaign itineraries so the EC can coordinate and avoid clashes. With Museveni, Kyagulanyi, Muntu, Munyagwa and others now in the race, the 2026 contest is shaping into a hotly contested election.
