There’s a sombre mood in Nyanga Village,Bitooma sub-county, Bushenyi district as five people have been confirmed dead after they were ,on Tuesday, struck by lightning. At least 25 others are nursing injuries at different health facilities .

The deceased have been identified as Elisam Tayebwa (65), Innocent Atwemerire (18), Shallot Tuhwerirwe (14), Nickson Atunkunda (13) and another identified as Kansime (15) all residents of Nyanga Village in Kakira Parish.

Jafari Basajabalaba, the LCV Chairperson Bushenyi says that the deceased were plucking tea and had taken shelter in a collection shade when it started raining.

 

Robert Kansiime, an eyewitness says that the residents transported 19 injured people to Kampala international University hospital, whereas six were rushed to Komboni hospital.

Deodata Amutusimire ,one of the mothers who lost her child expressed her grief saying she was shocked when she had heard that her child was killed by lightning.

“I was in the same garden harvesting tea but when it started raining, I decided to go for shelter in another place shortly we started hearing people making noise, reaching the place where some workers had gone for shelter, I found even my son was among those who died, the bodies were rushed to KIU hospital,” said Amutusimire.

She called upon the government to ensure they install lightning arresters to guarantee their safety during the rainy season.
