Police are holding 14 suspects including women for their alleged involvement in the murder of different elderly persons.

Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, says elderly persons are being targeted by their relatives for their property.

According to Enanga, at least 7 elderly people living in their houses alone were hacked to death between July 14 and August 10th, 2019.

He says they have registered ten incidents involving attacks on elderly persons countrywide over the past one month. Seven of the victims died on sport after being hacked.

Four cases were reported from Rwizi region that covers Mbarara, Uganda, Bushenyi and Sheema districts.

Other cases have been recorded in Elgon region particularly Mbale, West Nile and Kigezi region. On July 31st, 2019, Adoniya Rumanyisa, 70, was killed by his relatives.

80-year-old Zelina Akena was killed in Maracha district by his grandson, Julius Mawa using a hoe.

In Sironko, Yefusa Mayimani was hacked to death by his wife with the help of a neighbor who disguised himself as a visitor.

Enanga says police management has directed Regional and District Police to ensure that all elderly persons within their territorial command are protected.
