Police in Namisindwa district Friday evening engaged in running battles with residents who held a demonstration over the transfer of the Chief Administrative Officer- CAO.

Francis Odap was earlier this month transferred to Nebbi district after only two years in Namisindwa.

Now, the irate locals faulted the district leadership led by William Wopuwa for influencing the CAO’s transfer.

The locals demanded that LCV boss Wopuwa and his council explain to them circumstances under which the Odap was swiftly removed from Namisindwa despite his impressive service.

In his response, Wopuwa refuted the allegation stressing that the appointing authority is responsible for the CAO’s transfer.

“The CAOs are by law appointed and transferred by the ministry, not politicians or any individual like me, the residents are being misled by my opposition to taint my name and leadership.” Wapowa, himself former CAO said.

John Robert Tukei, Elgon Zone police spokesperson says they would not allow residents to go on with the demonstrations because they had not gotten permission.

“As Police, we could not allow the demonstration to go on because they (Demonstrators) never got any permission from us to hold it,” Tukei said in an interview.
