The Lwemiyaga county Member of Parliament, Theodore Ssekikubo will be arraigned in the courts after he was slapped with charges of assault, inciting violence and malicious damage to property in a foiled market protest.
Police on Friday morning intercepted the Legislator from the Lwemiyaga sub-county cattle market in Sembabule district, after frustrating a protest by herdsmen who had adamantly taken their livestock to the market.
The herdsmen were objecting to a recent quarantine by the government on livestock movement.
Paul Kangave, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson says Ssekikuubo has been on a warrant for prior offenses committed including organizing a mob to assault vendors supplying milk to dairies in the area.
Kangave notes that the police have registered several complaints from assaulted victims who also claim their milk was poured away and containers ruined by the mob.
Geoffrey Muzunga, the Chairperson of the Nabitanga sub-county in Sembabule district says there was no need for quarantine because the area is free from foot and mouth disease. He has faulted the Police for letting a few greedy individuals frustrate residents’ sources of income.
However, Dr. Emmanuel Kalungi Kawooya, the Sembabule District Production Officer clarified that according to the recent scientific assessment that was done in Lwemiyaga district as a whole, there is still a danger of Foot and Mouth Disease, hence the restrictions.
