Police in the Kampala metropolitan area have nabbed seven suspected thugs in an operation to crack down on counterfeit currency in the city.

The suspects who include 3 Ugandans and 4 Cameroonians were picked up from Cham towers, crystal valley hotel, Mengo, Nsambya, and Lukuli Makindye division.

Police mouthpiece Fred Enanga identifies some of the suspects as Biyonga Konvasky Elengo, Ansho Ambe, Ebayi Solomon, and Tanui Oliver among others.

Enanga says police mounted four separate raids on suspected criminal gangs and managed to seize fake Ugandan shillings,16 bundles of black paper US dollars, black dollar bills to the tune of 10.500 US $, chemicals among others.

Another operation happened at Mpererewe a Kampala suburb where a 50-year-old woman identified as Nakigudde Amina a resident of Mugereka village, Kiboga district was arrested alongside her accomplice, Masagazi Tom a Boda Boda operator and resident of Mpererewe.

Enanga says Nakiggude was captured in possession of 2 100 dollar fake notes under the same serial number,945 fake notes of Ugx 50.000 amounting to 47.250million, black notes of 50.000 amounting to 55 million all coming down to a grand total of 112.250million and 200 $.

In her statement at Special Investigations Division, Kireka, Nakigudde said she bought the duplicate notes from Daniel Ssenyonjo, a resident of Mukono. Police are now hunting for Ssenyonjo.

According to Enanga, this is part of a surveillance operation that has been ongoing for three months following complaints from Bank Of Uganda (BOU)about fake currency notes in circulation.
