An ill-fated road accident at kakira stage along Jinja -Mbale highway has claimed the lives of seven people on spot.
It occurred after a taxi registration Reg.no UBC 513X almost rammed into a trailer Reg no.KBW 566C/ZE4144 that was driving in the opposite direction.
Four people in the taxi from Mbale headed for Kampala died on the spot while three others were confirmed dead upon arrival at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital emergency unit.
While the others are yet to be identified only two of the deceased have been recognized as Robert Kusolo and Esther Namaganda.
Eyewitnesses at the scene claim the taxi was brutally smashed to a nearby drainage by the first moving trailer and a few panicking survivors were seen escaping through the broken mirrors in an attempt to save their lives.
Some of the survivors fault the driver of the trailer who they claim left his lane of the road hence pushing the taxi to the drainage.
The Kiira Region Deputy Police Commander, Onesmus Mwesigwa, says police is still investigating the exact cause of the accident.
The dead bodies are s currently at Jinja Regional Referral hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
