Police authorities in Kampala have vowed to take action against police officers who fired stray bullets at two passersby on Tuesday afternoon during a chaotic joint security operation on illegal vendors at downtown Kampala.

The two people identified as Nankya Rachel a student of Lugazi mixed SS and one Jimmy are currently nursing bullet wounds at Mulago National Referral hospital.

Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango says action will be taken against the top police commanders who were involved in this operation.

He said a case file has been opened in that regard and all involved will face the law once investigations are complete.

Trouble started for the commandos on Tuesday afternoon when the officers stormed downtown Kampala to carry out an operation on illegal vending and other illegal activities happening there but met stiff resistance from the vendors who instigated a physical fight between them and the KCCA law enforcement officers.

In the process police retaliated by releasing tear gas and firing stray bullets in the air that unfortunately landed on the two victims while the illegal vendors fled the scene.

The two were picked up amidst the chaos and rushed to Mulago hospital by Police officers.

Onyango says they are in liaison with the legal department of the KCCA law enforcement department to follow up with the injured.

The police mouthpiece, however, cautioned the vendors against using force to fight law enforcement officers but instead abide by the KCCA by-laws.
