Kampala metropolitan police mouthpiece Patrick Onyango says Police operatives on Thursday stormed kalungi plaza in the city suburbs and seized over 126 suspected stolen phones and a laptop believed to be used for changing serial numbers and flashing phones.
Onyango says they carried out the operation following intelligence reports about shops in the city center dealing in the buying and selling of stolen phones and other electronics.
He says police have charged the suspected thugs with being in possession of the stolen property but will release them on police bond to pave way for protracted investigations that will involve forensic experts verifying all the 126 phones to ascertain if they were indeed stolen.
In October last year, police in a joint security operation raided several shops in the city suburbs including, cooper complex and Mutaasa Kafeero plazas and impounding over 1600 suspected stolen phones. In the same operation, over 250 suspects were detained produced in the courts of law.
