Police have opened fire on a drunken Boda Boda Man for defying curfew as directed by the president and assaulting a police officer.
The incident happened at Kisimbiri Trading Centre in Wakiso district on Tuesday night.
The suspect identified as Vincent who was shot injuring his left buttock is at Mulago hospital currently nursing his bullet wound.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango in a statement on 1st of April 2020 says the suspect was drunk and violent towards police officers who were enforcing the presidential directive on the 7 pm curfew as a result of COVID-19.
Onyango says the police officers who include Kabos Isaac and Wafula Stephen tried to stop the suspect who instead increased his speed almost knocking them down before assaulting one.
“It’s alleged that the victim attempted to knock down police officers who were on duty several times but he failed and then grabbed one Pc Kabos Isaac, assaulted him and in the process of rescuing Pc Kabos, Wafula Stephen shot and injured him,” reads an excerpt.
Police have since opened a case of assault against the suspect.
He further urged members of the public to respect personnel on duty and obey their orders.
The president on Monday evening announced a nationwide curfew from 7 pm to 6:30 am daily for the next 14 days in a bid to slow down the spread of COVID-19.
Uganda has so far confirmed 44 cases of COVID-19.
The latest batch was of samples taken from 175 people that came back with 11 results testing positive , all the 11 were of children from Watoto Choir who had recently traveled to Canada and the UK but were still undergoing the mandatory quarantine.
