Police in Soroti has nabbed a fake hawker caught selling herbal medicines under the precept that it cures the novel COVID-19 pandemic at Soroti regional referral hospital.
The man was captured following a tipoff from patients and their attendants after he managed to convince a few desperate people into purchasing his quack medicine.
The concoction was a brown liquid packed in a white container.
The fraudster identified as Kungu is currently in police detention on the charge of spreading false propaganda. Kungu will be prosecuted in courts of law once his case file is sanctioned.”
A police statement by ASP David Mudong police Public Relations Officer-PRO East Kyoga states that Kungu on April, 2 while at Soroti Regional Hospital with intent to extort money from patients gave false propaganda when he convinced people that he had discovered a local herb that cures the novel virus.
Meanwhile, eleven out of the thirteen COVID-19 suspects at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital have tested negative to the virus.
The thirteen are among the 37 residents who returned home from other countries in March and were put under institutional quarantine. They include the eight municipal officers who visited Sweden for official duties.
Eight persons have remained under institutional quarantine at Soroti Comprehensive Nursing School while one person presenting with signs and symptoms of the virus is in isolation at the TB Unit.
The ministry of Health MOH has continued to encourage the public to regularly wash hands with soap and water or use certified sanitizers, avoid large crowds by social distancing and stay home during this curfew.
